Irate youths disrupt burial, destroy coffin, injure many in A-Ibom

THE lingering hostility between Adiasim and Ekpenyong Atai 11communities in Essien Udim local government area of Akwa Ibom heightened last weekend as youths of the two communities engaged in a fight that disrupted a burial ceremony.
Vanguard gathered that what started as a mere disagreement over a girl degenerated into a full blown battle as the youths of Ekpenyong Atai 11, were alleged to have launched an offensive on their neighbours of Adiasim Ikot Akaan which led several sympathizers at the funeral injured.
A reliable source from the area who did not want his name in print said “the irate youths of Ekpenyong Atai 11, stormed the compound of the deceased, and disrupted the ceremony.
“The hoodlums went as far as destroying the coffin, canopies and other valuables and even demanded for the corpse for destruction. It was an action the leaders, elders and stakeholders from our area has frowned at describing it as the worst sacrilege.”
However in a petition to the State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio and copied to security agencies, the stakeholders who rose from an emergency meeting on the matter, condemned the incident and asked that the culprits be brought to book.
Sources from the area told Vanguard in Uyo that except government intervened in the matter, the hope of restoring peace and lasting solution to lingering crisis may be elusive.

Jackie-Chan-Son-arrestThe son of kung fu star Jackie Chan has finally been freed from prison as he apologized for making “mistakes” after serving six months in a Chinese jail for drugs offences. Jaycee Chan, who like his father has worked as an actor and singer, was released from prison on Friday.
“I made mistakes, I will remember this lesson, I won’t commit mistakes again in the future,” he said in Beijing. “I want to apologize to everyone for my mistakes. I’m genuinely sorry.”
Recall that Chan was detained in August and charged with providing a venue for others to use drugs after police found 100 grams 3.5 ounces of marijuana at his home in Beijing. The 32-year-old had already spent five months in prison when he was sentenced in January after pleading guilty to the crime. “I haven’t been a very good role-model for the youth, I feel really ashamed,” he said.

on   /   in News 9:15 pm   /   Comments
By Nwabueze Okonkwo
Blood bath is now looming at the Bridgehead market, Onitsha, Anambra state, as Board of Trustees, BoT of the market under the aegis of Onitsha Bridgehead Market Traders Association, OBMTA condemned the delay by the state government to conduct an election that will produce executive members of the association, as scheduled.
A three-man peace committee had after meeting with the trustees of the market and officials of the state Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Industry, scheduled the election for March 15, 2015 but the exercise could not hold.
Again, the election was rescheduled for April 30 but when it could not hold again for what the trustees perceived as an unjustifiable reason, the traders became enraged and wanted to go on rampage, but for the timely intervention of members of the Board of Trustees, BoT of the market.
Reacting to the development, Chairman of the OBMTA BoT, Chief Robert Ozigbo accused the state Commissioner for Commerce, Trade and Industry, Hon. Ifeatu Onejeme of being responsible for the confusion that is rocking the market which is currently resulting to near anarchy.
Ozigbo told newsmen who went to cover the election that did not hold that the traders were not happy about the constant postponement of the exercise by the commissioner who has been trying to stabilize care-taker committee system in the market over the years.
